Marcia
is involved in many other activities in Newton, some related to her
role as Alderman, others not.
NEWTON
NORTH LIASON COMMITTEE -
The entire Newton
North High School
Project is assuming ever-greater importance for the City of Newton as the
actual construction work gets underway. Marcia has been extremely involved in
the entire NNHS process, and was selected as one of the designated representatives
from
the Board of Aldermen to the Liason Committee.
BRIGHAM
COMMUNITY HOUSE -
One of the unique resources available to teens in Newton is the Brigham
Community House. Marcia serves on the Board of Directors at BCH
and is active in helping develop new programs as well as secure
continued funding for existing activities.
ALBEMARLE
PLAYGROUND PROJECT -
The Albemarle field (a.k.a. the Russell J. Halloran Sports
and Recreation Complex) is a wonderful resource for all of Newton,
located in Ward 2 adjacent to the Horace Mann School as well as
Day Middle School. A group of concerned parents and citizens
formed an organization to build a new playground. The first phase
is complete, with more improvements in progress.
ELIOT
CHURCH OF NEWTON -
One of the many vibrant faith communities in Newton, Eliot Church
has been an important part of the Johnsons' family life.
THE
SECOND STEP -
Newton is home to a very innovative and important program serving
women who are trying to rebuild their lives as they overcome the
problems of domestic violence and abuse. The Second Step is a non-profit
organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic violence
one family at a time. Marcia was
deeply
involved
in helping
save the former Red Cross building in Newtonville from falling
into the hands of a developer. Working with the neighbors and the
rest
of
the community, Second Step was able to acquire the property and
it is now a beautiful home for several families in the program.
NEWTONVILLE
HISTORIC DISTRICT - Preserving the charm and character of Newton's
neighborhoods is an important value for Marcia. She has worked very
hard along with numerous other members of the community to establish
the new Newtonville Historic District.
